Jim Newsome has a long history in the shipping industry. His father, James I. Newsome, Jr, was an executive with the Georgia Ports Authority in Savannah for 25 years during the time when containerization was first introduced in that port, in addition to subsequent roles in maritime labor relations on behalf of the shipping industry and allied service providers. Following in his fathers footsteps, Jim has had leadership roles with a number of steamship companies during his career from Strachan Shipping in the early days , to president at Nedlloyd Lines and finally Hapag Lloyd where he also served as president.

Jims' contributions have been significant and are recognized within the industry. Two years go Jim was presented with the 2010 Connie Award from the Containerization & Intermodal Institute for his significant influence in containerization in worldwide trade and transportation.
